New QEII Hospital, Howlands, Welwyn Garden City AL7 4HQ
The New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City opened in 2015, replacing the original QEII Hospital which opened in 1963. It provides a range of outpatient clinics and services including blood tests, as well as an urgent treatment centre which is open every day from 8am to 10pm. Some services at the New QEII Hospital are provided by Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust, including children’s therapies.
The New QEII Hospital has a modern and welcoming environment. Its design is inspired by the original Garden City concept through its use of materials (including timber, glass and hung tiles) the pitched roof line and a central courtyard garden area which is open to patients, visitors and staff from all the ground floor waiting areas. The hospital has also been designed to be sustainable and environmentally friendly – the shape and layout of the building creates natural shading, the window glass helps prevent the building getting too hot from the sun and a planted green roof encourages biodiversity.
