Services available at: Lister Hospital
At East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust we recognise that care for our patients and their family continues even after death.
Our experienced Mortuary & Bereavement team provide a caring and compassionate service, offering practical and emotional support, information, reassurance and guidance to the immediate family or next of kin of anyone who dies within the Lister Hospital.
What happens when a loved one has died
Certain formalities must be dealt with following the death of a relative or friend. Before the death can be registered, you will require a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) which states the cause of death. This is a very important certificate which we aim to complete within 1-2 working days – on occasion, this may take longer. In the event that this process takes longer than 1-2 working days, the office will keep families informed through regular communication. A doctor will also complete any other specified documentation for the Funeral Director.
Following a death in hospital
Please telephone the Bereavement office on the next working day, where an bereavement assistant will advise you on the process involved in getting the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) complete. You will also be advised of the name of your designated Medical Examination Officer (MEO) who supports the Medical Examiner in scrutinising the circumstances and cause of death.
The Bereavement assistant will support you with any questions you may have, such as how to register the death, the process to collect personal property from hospital and to arrange viewings.
For any further information please view the online version of the Bereavement booklet.
