Services available at: Lister Hospital
The Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre (LMCC), which opened in 2014, is a purpose-built facility with 18 chairs allowing the delivery of chemotherapy and associated care.
There are two restful and soothing gardens for patients and their families, which have been designed to help improve response to treatment, as well as provide a welcome environment for accompanying family and friends. The centre also features private areas where people can discuss sensitive information about their diagnosis and treatment with clinical and nursing staff.
You can call the team with chemotherapy queries on 01438 284441.
To rebook consultation appointments please call 01438 284416 or 01438 284110.
Location, directions and parking
The centre is located just inside the Lister Hospital’s main entrance.
Parking is available in the nearby patient and visitor multi-storey car park, which is located close to the same main entrance. Patients arriving by hospital transport are dropped off at a designated drop-off area with easy access to the centre. Wheelchairs are also available nearby.
Opening times and visitors
The centre is open for patients from Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 6.00pm, with the reception area staffed from 8.00am to 5.00pm (with the exception of bank holidays). Patients requiring emergency/urgent chemotherapy out of normal working hours are transferred to the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC). Due to the limited size of the centre’s waiting area, we ask that you attend for your appointment at the time stated. We also ask patients who wish to be accompanied by a friend or relative to restrict this to one person, and request that babies and children under 12 years old do not attend. If you have any concerns with this, please discuss them with the nurse looking after you or the senior charge nurse.
For current visitor guidance please also see our coronavirus page here.
Food and drink
Volunteers are available to serve refreshments to patients and carers; patients may also bring in their own food. A refrigerator is available in the kitchen, with cold water dispensers in waiting areas.
Facilities
Please feel free to bring your own computer, MP3 player or DVD players for entertainment, but please also bring headphones to avoid disturbing other patients; the centre has free public Wi-Fi access. Please bring any medication with you that you may need to take whilst in the hospital for your appointments.
Patient forum
We hold weekly group consultations for patients to attend before the start of the first cycle of treatment, where you will be given general information about chemotherapy, hints on how to keep yourself well whilst receiving your treatment and you will be given a tour of the unit and a chance to ask any questions. This will be provided in a group approximately seven days before chemotherapy treatment commences.
Our staff
The centre is overseen by a head of chemotherapy, who is responsible for the quality standards within the service and for continual improvements. On a daily basis, the service is led by a senior nurse and is staffed by a team of nurses who have expertise in performing cannulation and administering chemotherapy, registered nurses and clinical support workers (CSWs). There are also support staff, including administrative assistants and clinic clerks, all of whom are dedicated to supporting our patients and their families while they receive chemotherapy. Volunteers from the Friends of The Lister Hospital also assist the team in some of the daily administrative tasks. Other staff who support our patients include doctors, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, dietitians, a psychological support team and therapists. Patients are also supported by our acute oncology nurse.
